Direct Mail Information You Should Consider

 

Direct mail information is quite a broad topic to discuss. However, there is some basic direct mail information that everyone should know, even if they will not end up directly using or exploiting this info for themselves.

Direct mail is a form of direct marketing. In order to be able to better discuss direct mail information, we must first discuss direct marketing. Direct marketing is act of sending marketing information directly to people, mostly without resorting to intermediate means or media such as advertisements through television, radio, websites, and the like. It usually tries to get the recipient of the information to do certain things. This is called in marketing parlance as a "call to action". If there is a direct call to action within an ad, even when using a medium, it is considered direct marketing.

 

There are several ways of conducting direct marketing aside from direct mail. These methods include telemarketing, where phone numbers, which could be either random or selected, are called with the intent of directly delivering product or service information along with a call to action. Another is spamming, or email marketing, which involves sending unsolicited emails containing product info to selected or random email addresses. Another type, broadcast faxing involves sending faxes to several fax numbers. This has fallen into disuse in current times due to the practice being made illegal in many areas. The use of mediums such as flyers and promotional items is also considered to be direct marketing if a call to action is present.

As to direct mail information, direct mail by far is the most common form of direct marketing in the world today, ahead of spamming at present. In many countries and territories, sending mail by bulk reduces the postal rate low enough to make direct mail feasible. Marketers usually do one of two things when deciding who to send direct mail to. The first option is to send mail all the addresses in a given area. The other option, often used when targeting specific markets, is to send to addresses contained in a list.

Direct mail comes in several formats. The one most familiar would be catalogs, printed magazines or booklets with selections of products currently being sold. The forms that direct mail comes in show much variance but all exhibit the characteristics of a direct marketing tool; that is they contain info and ask persons reading the mail to perform certain actions, like call a number or to buy immediately.

Other direct mail information that must be considered involves the advantages and disadvantages of direct mailing. The most notable advantage is that direct mail can help marketers target very specific markets quite well. Personalization is another advantage, as direct mailing can use data gather from previous transactions to give prospects better suited offers. The scope and scale of direct mailing also allows statistical data concerning market information, such as customer wants, needs, and spending habits, within specific geographical areas. This makes the job of a marketer easier, as even non responses can provide valuable data.

Direct mailing however, has several disadvantages, not the least of which is massive waste in natural resources. Also, many people dislike direct mailing and boycott companies that do such practices. Lastly, direct mailing has massive costs, not only in sending out materials, but in developing databases that make use of information based on how people respond to direct mail.
